In March 1991 at the first European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in its new version in Vienna, the chairman of the Refresher Course Programme in Chest Radiology, invited all the European speakers involved in this programme to a meeting in order to share with all of them, this vision of creating a European Society of Thoracic Imaging.

During this meeting, the members embraced the idea and it was decided to organise a brainstorming meeting the next year to concrete this idea. This was achieved by a 2-day-seminar during the spring of 1992 in Grenoble. There, the objectives and the bases of the statutes were established. On this basis, ESTI was officially created in June 1993 during the inaugural meeting in Luxembourg.
Since then and so far, annual meetings were organised without any interruption.
